Guardianship is when a court gives an adult custody of a child and/or the responsibility of managing the child's property. Before women could own property, guardians were appointed for their minor children if their husband died.

Margaret Taylor Winget was born on December 19, 1830 in Fairfield, Bath Township, Greene County, Ohio. Her parents were David Taylor and Mary Bolen. According to the Shelby County, Ohio Probate Court guardianship records Margaret was four years old on October 28, 1834.

After her father's death in 1834, John Staley was chosen as her guardian and the guardian of her sisters Ann and Nancy. On August 4, 1836, William J. Martin was appointed guardian to the Taylor children. On September 6, 1846 her brother, Jacob was appointed her guardian.

She married Martin Winget on December 27, 1849. Martin was born on May 30, 1820 in Mad River Township, Clark County, Ohio. He was the son of Caleb Winget and Nancy Shellabarger. Two of Caleb's sisters married two of Margaret's brothers.

Martin and Margaret's children included:
Caleb Winget (May 31, 1851, married Barbara Jane Leatherman),
Nancy Jane Winget (February 25, 1853) and
John Winget (August 22, 1857).

Margaret and Martin were living in Mad River Township in 1850. Martin was 34 and Margaret was 19.

Margaret died on August 10, 1858 and Nancy died in 1879. Martin appeared in the 1880 census in Mad River. He was age 60 and a border in the Nancy Coffield household. Martin died in 1896.

Clark County, Ohio was formed March 1, 1817, from Champaign, Madison and Greene Counties. The first settlement was in 1796. The inhabitants of German Township were German Lutherans who came from Virginia.
